 regulations and specifications for permanent
 highway signs and temporary
 construction signs.
“That’s an important piece of what
we do,” Jan said. “If you don’t have
access to the equipment, it’s hard to get
the job done so we created an in-house
 process for providing that equipment
 to contractors.”
 Major Projects
Barricades and Signs has also grown
by participating in several major projects
in Alberta. One of the notable
projects the company was involved in
early on was the Northwest Anthony
 Henday construction.
Barricades and Signs provided a large
majority of the traffic control for this
 project. The company then provided
 over 1,500 ground-mounted regulatory
 signs for the Northeast Anthony
 Henday construction project. The company
provided a large majority of the
 temporary traffic control products for
 the Southeast Stoney Trail construction
in Calgary and provided all the signage
for the Fort McMurray airport construction
 project.
 Today, Barricades and Signs has
grown into a multi-million dollar business
that employs over 30 people, with
 Alberta locations in Edmonton and
Calgary, and one office in both B.C. and
Manitoba. The company has over 20
fleet vehicles and around 140 pieces of
 trailered equipment.
 In recent years, Jan purchased
his brother’s ownership stake in the
 business. He recently underwent the
same process with his father, who was
 interested in retiring. Moving forward,
Jan has entered into a partnership with
 Powell Contracting Ltd., an Ontariobased
 company that invests in infrastructure
 businesses. Jan, who remains
the CEO and has operational control of
the business, said Powell Contracting is
offering resources and advice that will
enable the business to expand across
 Western Canada.
“This partnership means that we now
have the backing and support to take
the products and services we’ve developed,
and deliver them into new markets
and create a positive experience for
contractors and for the employees that
we get to bring on board as we grow,”
Jan said. “The exciting thing about the
deal was that it closed on the 15th anniversary
 of our business.”
With the average age of the company’s
employees being 30, Jan said there
is room for them to grow and develop as
 they help lead the expansion.
“What makes us unique is, aside
from our people being young and early
in their careers, is that we invest a lot in
